Golf

From the north of the country to the Alentejo, passing through the Beiras and across the ocean to the archipelago of the Azores, golf has been attracting many new enthusiasts all over Portugal.
Founded as a nation in 1143, Portugal gradually established its borders on a definitive basis over the course of the next century, so that it is now one of Europe’s oldest countries. Nowadays, it is one of the most highly regarded golfing destinations in the world, particularly as it benefits from a mild climate that makes it possible to play golf here all year round. The establishment of golf as a regular sport in Portugal was directly linked to the creation of the first golf club at the end of the 19th century: the Oporto Niblicks Club.

With about 30 high-class courses, the Algarve is visited by golfers from all over the world. The many hours of sunshine, which allow you to play until late, and the fabulous climate, make the region a golfing destination throughout the year.

In the Algarve, the quality of the fairways is a constant concern. The courses were designed by respected names, such as Henry Cotton, Rocky Roquemore or Arnold Palmer, and provide a good challenge. Accept and give wing to your swing on flat or rough courses, nearly always with the ocean as a backdrop.

With degrees of difficulty for all, many of the courses are on the international circuit, regularly hosting important competitions. Get acquainted with courses, such as San Lorenzo and the Old Course in Vilamoura, ranking amongst the best in Europe.
If you’re still not satisfied with your swing, improve it at an Academy. They are waiting for you at the David Leadbetter in Carvoeiro and at the Grotter, at the Alto Golfe (Portimão) and at the Vila Sol (Vilamoura). After the game, socialise in friendly clubhouses. Supplement your golfing experience in the Algarve, by getting to know the region. Swim in warm, calm water and indulge in water sports. At night, place a bet in the casino or visit the beach bar. Take the opportunity to get to know our excellent cuisine and wines.
Portugal is a paradise for every kind of golfer, for here they will find courses set in all manner of different and breathtaking landscapes. There is an ever-increasing supply of golfing venues, with new courses appearing on a cyclical basis. All of them have a high level of aesthetic and logistical quality, being specially designed to satisfy the most demanding golfers - which explains why each year Portugal hosts three important tournaments in the European professional circuit: the Portuguese Open in the Algarve, the Madeira Open and the Estoril Open.
Nowadays, however, there are more than 70 courses in Portugal, whilst there are also quite a few more under construction and several others that are due to open shortly. (ICEP)
